Winners of the Enterprising Britain Awards 2013

Burnley is celebrating after being named the 'Most  Enterprising Place in Britain' as well as being the UK Finalist in the European Enterprise Promotion Awards . The Lancashire town received  the accolade for its ongoing commitment to support small and  medium sized businesses and for successfully reframing  perceptions of Burnley.

The four winning teams who were presented Awards were:

1.  ENCOURAGING EXPORTING

      London Borough of Hackney

2.  SCHOOL/FE THAT BEST SUPPORTS ENTERPRISING AMBITION IN YOUNG PEOPLE

     NE Scotland College (formerly Aberdeen College)

3.  MOST ENTERPRISING AREA IN BRITAIN (UK Entry in European Enterprise Promotion Awards)

     Burnley Bondholders Scheme

4.  PROMOTING ENTERPRISE (UK Finalist in the European Enterprise Promotion Awards)

     The Premier League Ltd

To underline the Government's commitment to these Awards, the winners were joined later in the event by Dr Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business Innovation & Skills who spent some time talking to the representatives of the winning organisations.

Kevin Smith, CEO of Young Chamber UK Ltd who organised the 2013 Enterprising Britain Awards competition commented that:

"The 2013 EBA competition produced a very strong field of entries with the highest number of UK entries ever seen for this competition so this year's winner should be very proud of their success. The EBA celebrate the enterprising endeavours of initiatives from across the UK and the support shown to these Awards by the Government emphasises the importance it places on developing enterprise throughout the UK.”

Awards were also presented for 'Highly Commended' to:

2.    SCHOOL/FE THAT BEST SUPPORTS ENTERPRISING AMBITION IN YOUNG PEOPLE

       Barking & Dagenham College

       Darwen Aldridge Community College

3.    MOST ENTERPRISING AREA IN BRITAIN

       Medway Council

4.    PROMOTING ENTERPRISE

       Hull Youth Enterprise 

The Enterprising Britain Awards are a key part of the Government’s drive to increase rates of entrepreneurial activity in the UK. They are being managed by Young Chamber Ltd (YCUK) on behalf of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS).
